Training Process Control and Safeguarding

Introduction

There is a trend for the Process Control industry to treat safety as an important priority and install a variety of safety equipment and systems. However, advances in technology and standardization suggest that plants take a fresh look at their safety systems. Major latest advances include of fieldbus systems featuring an approved safety bus and the integration of the safety instrumented system (SIS) with the process control system. These advances and associated standards are the driving forces for a renewed approach to Safeguarding a Process Control system.

However, designing effective safeguarding mechanisms requires an understanding of the entire process, safety requirements and solutions, international standards, process control, and fieldbuses. Using fieldbuses for safety and integrating the safety system with process control systems are relatively new concepts in the process industry.

Traditional fieldbus networks aren’t suitable for safety-related controls. However, specialized fieldbus systems that incorporate safety as an integral component of the network are already available, e.g., PROFIsafe. The majority of fieldbus systems use a “black channel” approach to their safety communications bus. This means that only one physical layer channel is used for both, normal communications and communications involving safety functions that involve additional checks and balances to meet additional safety requirements and protections. These enhancements make the bus a “safety bus” and, in many cases, allow sharing infrastructure between that safety bus and conventional control communications.

This seminar covers the fundamentals of safety and the major approaches for assuring system safety for process control. The approaches include integrated system, separate system, fieldbus solutions, intrinsic safety, functional safety, process control design solutions, safety instrumented system (SIS), safety alarms, and international standards.

Seminar Objectives

  • This programme is designed to provide engineers, managers, and technicians with an overview of safety systems as it relates to process control systems.
  • Cover both, intrinsic and functional safety solutions
  • Discuss safety integrity levels (SILs) and techniques to achieve them

 Training Methodology

This programme has been designed for both novice and experienced engineers and technicians.  The training methodology is a combination of Instructor presentations and case studies. This is followed by a series of videos involving safety in process control systems. This is complemented by Instructor led workshops with active delegate participation. Throughout the programme, delegates will learn through active participation using review exercises and questionnaires of each major topic.
