Training Fault Analysis in Electrical Networks

Introduction

The detection and identification of faults on an electrical network has been and still is one of the problems facing Transmission and Distribution companies. The characteristics and operation of a network system are major considerations in creating or reducing the effects of electrical faults on the system.

Effective modern protective systems are designed to sense faults and send a warning signal or initiate disconnection of the faulty system in an appropriate time.

Delegates are encouraged to participate by active involvement in group discussions and sharing experiences.

Objectives

The seminar is designed to present methods of electrical fault analysis. The causes of electrical faults and the detection and possible solutions in a network system.  The method of this seminar is to develop the delegates thinking process.

Following the attendance at this seminar, participants will return to their respective departments with a wider knowledge of the concepts of electricity and the inherent danger that electricity can cause. On successful completion of this seminar, participants will have:

  • Understand the different types of faults and their effect
  • Consequences of sustained fault current and any electrical arcs
  • Knowledge of symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults
  • Earthing/grounding systems
  • Network protection systems

Training Methodology

Each seminar participant will receive a copy of the comprehensive seminar notes. The presenter will outline and discuss the topics using computer displays, Power Point displays and other. The seminar is designed to have an interactive format to maximize delegate participation. Questions and answers are encouraged throughout and at the daily sessions. Case studies and examples will be discussed in the daily sessions. This gives participants the opportunity to discuss with other delegates and the presenter their specific problems and appropriate solutions. Only minimum note taking is encouraged to ensure maximum delegate attention during the seminar.

Organisational Impact

The seminar will allow delegates to interact and gain from shared experiences of others. Carefully selected examples and case studies will be used to illustrate the material being discussed and in particular, emphasis will be given to ensure that the material is appropriate to the organization represented. Each delegate should leave with an awareness and understanding of their roles and responsibilities in the workplace in relation to electrical safety.

 Personal Impact

On successful completion of this seminar delegates will be able to:

  • Develop a structured knowledge of different types of faults and their effect
  • A deeper  understanding of what issues arise from AC networks
  • Better understand of what may cause electrical accidents
