STRUCTURE AND STYLES IN PETROLEUM EXPLORATION

OBJECTIVES

Over the last decade considerable advances have been made in the understanding and interpretation of structural styles in many different settings. Evaluation of structures at the field and reservoir scale has also become increasingly more important. This course investigates structural style, their plate tectonic setting, how structure evolves with time and techniques use to determine, interpret and predict structural geometry’s. Emphasis is places on interpretation of seismic data to resolve a) the structural geometry, b) the type of structural province and its kinematics and c) structural evolution. Trap style in the different structural provinces are discussed. Structural geology is not considered in isolation, the way different structural styles affect basin formation, sedimentation patterns, seals, source, reservoir, migration pathways and migration timing are examined. Application of fault and fold mechanics to structural interpretation is also considered. Numerous short exercises are used to illustrate the main points.
