IMPROVED OIL RECOVERY : CONVENTIONAL INJECTION METHODS
OBJECTIVES
When does a reservoir become a candidate for secondary recovery? Primary reservoir drive system may fade and production rate decline. Performance calculations, such as frontal advance calculations, materials balance evaluations, decline curve analyses, volumetric calculations, and case histories demonstrate how individual processes work, and which oil reservoirs may be candidates for improves oil recovery techniques. Water flooding, polymer water flooding, hydrocarbon and non hydrocarbon immiscible gas injection techniques can increase production and income. Rock and fluid properties and reservoir behavior are studies to determine the flood pattern and coverage. Economic applications are particularly suited to reservoirs with inefficient natural drives and to those that contain higher than 20◦ API Oil.

- Remaining Oil-In-Place; material balance, volumetric means empirical and statistical methods; direct measurement techniques
- Permeability concepts : absolute, effective, relative; wettability; determinations from production data and petrophysics
- Flood Pattern and Coverage’s; standard and non standard flooding well networks, injection beyond breakthrough, effect of mobility ratio, influence of dip and directional permeabilities, effect of natural and induced fractures
- Immiscible Fluid Displacement Mechanism; frontal displacement concepts for water and gas, application to non linear systems
- Injection Rates and Pressure; influence of well patterns, change with flood-front position
- Performance Determinations; review of industry methods, example problems
- Water source and quality; selection treating systems, compatibility problems and water quality
- Improved Waterflooding; improving existing floods, addition of polymers
- Immiscible Gas Injection; use of hydrocarbon and non hydrocarbon gases in horizontal and dipping oil formations, design, displacement efficiencies
- Pilot flooding Systems objectives and design, choice of pattern, modifying factors in pilot design.
